Why do you snore and how to stop

All sounds are formed through a process by which vibrations cause particles in the air to move. This movement of vibrations also known as sound waves is then picked up and received by our ears. With snoring the sound is produced by air flowing over various tissues. This flowing air often becomes turbulent when passing through our throats or nose in areas that are restricted. These areas may become restricted for various reasons. There are a host of various products and surgeries designed to help correct snoring.

Often times when lying flat on our back gravity actually pulls at the soft palate located in the back of our throat. When this happens the soft palate falls or lengthens this lengthening of the soft palate effectively makes our throat smaller.  With a smaller air passage of the constant flow of air to our lungs becomes turbulent. This turbulent air begins to cause the tissues to vibrate causing snoring. A similar situation happens inside the nose due to our turbinates being swollen. Some additional reasons are: sinus infections, allergies, enlarged adenoids, small or restricted nasal passages, nasal blockage (maybe caused by polyps) and also septum deviations.

Nasal surgery generally targets turbinates which tend to get enlarged, nasal polyps and septum deviation. Currently the process targeting terminates is the only one being performed in a doctor's office. This process simply targets tissue in the nasal passage and by applying radiofrequency energy to tissue is scarred or hardened. This hardening prevents the tissues from swelling and eliminates narrowing of the nasal passage. This particular procedure requires several applications and results are typically not known for three months. Septum deviation can result during birth or any other trauma to the nose. It affects the wall that separates our nasal passages. Septum deviation surgery simply removes or repairs the cartilage between our nasal passages. Nasal polyps typically occur due to allergies and slowly grow over time. When the polyps are of sufficient size they must be removed. Although previously done in a local doctor's office today the surgery is usually performed in an operating room.

There are four types of oral surgeries to help correct or eliminate snoring.  All these surgeries typically target the palate or uvula.  Patients report varying degrees of pain and discomfort after the various surgeries.  These include: Uvulectomy. LAUP (uses a laser and trims the palate) Radio Frequency Ablation (similar to the nasal procedure however, used at the back of the throat), and Palate implants (Implanting of Dacron which stiffens the Palate helping to reduce tissue vibration) all these procedures should only be considered after determining that you have a serious snoring problem or if your sleep partner is threatening to move out.

There are so over-the-counter applications. You’ll find that some of these may actually help depending on the reason for your condition.

Although snoring is typically not a medical condition or medical problem it many imply that such a problem exists. It is therefore advised that if you are having problems falling asleep getting, a good night’s sleep, sleeping at work, or feeling restless during the day and hours you should consider seeking medical advice even if you are not the snorer. Many times the snorer's partner suffers the most and they are for medical attention or treatment should be a consideration.
