Treating snoring with Nasal surgery

Today's snoring surgery is targeted at reducing any obstructions that are narrowing the nasal passage. Surgery is also often used to open up an otherwise narrow anatomic area. It is quite often at the nasal passage has more than one area that is causing the snoring. Therefore often surgery is required on more than one area in order to cure snoring. Surgery generally will focus on the tongue, palate, nasal passage and the uvula. Most if not all surgeries may be performed at your local doctor's office. The advice though that many insurance companies do not cover the cost for the treatment of snoring. Therefore it is advisable that you contact your insurance company to discuss whether or not snoring is covered under your policy.

Nasal surgery

As the name implies this surgery focuses on the narrow nasal passage. Through the use of radio-frequency energy your doctor is able to build scar tissue on your turbinate’s. This results in a nasal passage that readily stays open. In most cases the operation or procedure takes less than 20 minutes. The majority of time is spent numbing the area in preparation for the surgery. The wand used in performing the procedure is placed in the tissue. For about 10 seconds the wand emits radio-frequency energy into the tissue. For maximum effect multiple applications are done on either side of the nose. To be considered successful scar tissue must have formed. As a result it generally takes three months to verify the success of the procedure. The procedure may need to be repeated as overtime the scar tissue may soften and this will lead to reoccurring narrowing of the nasal passage.

There are numerous anatomic problems that may cause snoring. The wall that separates the left and right nasal passages is also known as the septum.  The septum may be deviated by curving to one or both sides after trauma (even at birth). In cases where the septum has deviated corrective surgery is done to remove the affected cartilage. This surgery will typically be performed under general anesthesia you in an operating room. Snoring is generally much improved after this operation as long as the mean obstructions were removed or improved.

Allergies often cause growths in the know was known as polyps. They increase over time and as they do they create nasal blockage. Polyps typically require removal once they reach a significant size.  Previously this surgery was often performed at the local doctor's office. Today however, it is often preformed under general anesthesia in an operating room. By removing Polyps you remove nasal obstructions which should also help to reduce snoring.

Nasal surgery is probably one of the most common and in many cases will help to relieve, reduce or stop snoring.  As always you should seek professional advice as there may be alternative options such as Non-surgical procedures.  If you perform the appropriate tests and it is determined that surgery is required you are not alone.
