Corrective Oral Surgery for Snoring
Of the available surgeries today most are extremely successful in reducing or minimizing the effects of snoring. The primary failure in any surgery with regards to snoring is where the problem area lies. It is important before proceeding with surgery that you perform a snoring test. There are in-home and clinical tests that will help in determining the cause of and best possible treatments available for you or your snoring condition. Keep in mind that most individuals who snore have no ill effects. Surgery is often a measure taken to provide sleep for those individuals who have to sleep with the snorer.
A new implant procedure using the material known as Dacron is now in use. Small implants made from Dacron and are surgically implanted in the palate. Since snoring is typically caused by vibrating tissue, the Dacron implants work to stiffen the palate. By doing this the palate and its surrounding tissue are less likely to vibrate. This procedure is also known as palate implants.
A widely used and accepted procedure known as radio frequency ablation is often preformed at local physician's offices. It's a process that involves radio energy being directed into the tissue of the palate. The result is that the palate is wounded and in healing scars. This scar tissue acts as a stiffener therefore limiting the amount of vibration. As mentioned before limiting vibration helps to reduce snoring.
Another widely used procedure that may also be performed in your physician's office is known as LAUP. This procedure involves the use of a laser. The laser is used to make small incisions on each side of the uvula. This process also targets the palate by pulling it sideways and tightening it. One advantage to this procedure is most patients report mild pain for up to two weeks but relief generally comes from oral pain medication.
Removing the uvula is also a common and easy procedure. Removal of the uvula often takes place in the local doctor's office. Typically most people do not have any ill effects from the removal of the move low. There is however, a solid two weeks or so of pain and some people may need strong medications. The associated pain is usually described as that of a severe sore throat. It is advised that individuals who speak languages such as Hebrew and/or Farsi not opted for this procedure. The uvula is an essential part of the vocal system that is required to create the guttural fricatives.
Although there are wide choices of surgical operations available to reduce effects of snoring, surgery is not always necessary. As stated before, there are very few instances where surgery is actually necessary for the snorer. In most cases surgery is undertaken for those who sleep with or near the snorer. In many situations snoring can be reduced or eliminated through other forms or procedures. There are dental devices, nasal sprays, and other various products that all may help to reduce or eliminate snoring. It is strongly recommended that you always seek the advice of a professional. |
